Spreading Awareness (Post #15)

Hi! Welcome back to the Spiramen Founder's Blog! This week, we'll be shifting away from the science content we've looked at the past few weeks and instead talk about cancer awareness.

Part of our NGO's mission is to increase oral and throat cancer awareness, including the causes, measures of preventability and treatment. When we think about spreading awareness, we usually think of posters and presentations, but there are a lot of other ways to conduct this effectively in the community! Here are some things Spiramen is doing:

  1. Posts and Short Videos on Social Media

    1. Short form videos are shareable, entertaining, and more accesible to the wider community. Posting on sites like Insagram, Tiktok, and Facebook helps bring visibility to the cause.

  2. Community-Based Screening

    1. While this is part of our main objective, it also aids a lot with spreading awareness. People in our target community see and understand our initiative.

  3. WhatsApp Messages

    1. A lot of the older generations, like our parents and grandparents, use Whatsapp. Forwarding messages is common, and is a great way to target an older audience.

  4. Website

    1. Websites are open to all, easy to access, and store a lot of content! They're perfect for people who want to know more about your cause and increase engagement.

  5. Street Posters and Infographics

    1. This is the most common form of spreading awareness, which I've mentioned above. While it can be lacking at times, presenting information in bullet points (easy to read), using eye-catching colors, and a nice design can be very helpful to spreading information.

While we've started our awareness campaign in communities and in our members' social circles, we still have a long way to go with our target group! Helping them learn about oral and throat cancer, its causes, and how to avoid it are a core part of our mission!

Follow along with our weekly blog posts to see Spiramen's journey! Thanks for reading! See you next Friday.
